The 920th Rescue Wing's 4th Annual Rescue Feeds Food Drive is aiming to collect more than 3,000 pounds of nonperishable food and toiletries for the South Brevard Sharing Center Inc. by April 7.

The unit has donated approximately 5,200 pounds of food and supplies since 2014 in an effort to support the local community, said Master Sgt. Rhonda Danyus, 308th Rescue Squadron unit training manager.

"There are many families who are in need of food," said Danyus, who is coordinating the food drive. "Some may be experiencing a short-term financial situation and do not have anywhere to turn for a quick resolution on providing food for their families. Others are in a financial situation where they depend on long term help during hard times."

Danyus said the unit hopes to leave a positive footprint within the community by helping those in need.

There are 14 volunteers representing every unit within the wing. Each volunteer is gathering food and supplies from personnel in their respective organizations. The units will compete for the Golden Can Award, a traveling trophy that recognizes the component that collects the most goods.

According to its website, the SBSC is a nonprofit, community-based agency whose mission is to support, strengthen and empower families to achieve self-sufficiency in Brevard County.

Donations are being accepted at drop-off boxes throughout the base until April 7.
