Maj. Caleb Scherrer took command of the 306th Rescue Squadron during an assumption of command ceremony held at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, Jan. 8, 2023.

The assumption of command is a long-standing military tradition which uses the passing of a guidon from one commanding officer to another, symbolizing a formal transfer of ownership and responsibility.

Prior to Scherrer’s assumption of command, he served as the Director of Operations for the 306th Rescue Squadron. He is a Combat Rescue Officer with over 20 years active duty, initially as an enlisted Pararescueman. Scherrer has completed dozens of advanced combat schools and has deployed in support of operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Freedom Sentinel and Resolute Support.

The 306th RQS is assigned to the 943d Rescue Group at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, and is geographically separated from the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida. The mission of the 306th RQS is to develop and maintain a warrior culture where fitness, education and combat skills are practiced every day and to forge a team by sharing knowledge, experience and travel as well as to be a full partner in the 943d RQG; the rescue team of choice to recover isolated personnel anytime, anywhere.
