Patrick firefighers are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association Oct. 9-15, 2016, as part of National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait, Check the date!”

The focus on smoke alarm replacement comes as the result of a recent survey conducted by NFPA, which showed that only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are or how often they need to be replaced.

According to a NFPA report, in 20 percent of all U.S. homes with smoke alarms, there are smoke alarms that are not working. Additionally, 38 percent of home fire deaths result from fires without smoke alarms, or without a working smoke alarm.
