Combat search-and-rescue mission showcased during Melbourne air show

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla.— --  Nearly 200,000 spectators attended the Melbourne Air and Space Show, which showcased the advancements of avionics and airpower through civilian and military aircraft demonstrations April 1-2, 2017 at Melbourne, Florida.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, two F-35 Lightning II and the French air force’s Patrouille de France (which has not been participated in an air show in the U.S. in 30 years) demonstration teams headlined the event.

An HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter from the 920th Rescue Wing was displayed to inform attendees about the combat search-and-rescue mission and the men and women who live by the wing’s motto, ‘these things we do that others may live.’ Airmen from the 920th RQW also showcased equipment used during rescue missions such as night vision goggles, rescue tools and weapons.

HH-60G pilot Lt. Col. Rod Stout, 301st Rescue Squadron chief of tactics, said many people, especially the younger spectators, were delighted to step inside a helicopter.

“The Melborune airshow presented the 301st Rescue Squadron a great opportunity to showcase our capabilities and equipment to the local public,” said Stout. “Our aircrew were asked a variety of questions ranging from how to join the Air Force Reserve to what are the requirements to pilot an HH-60G? Children seemed to especially enjoy the chance to see the HH-60G Pave Hawk up close.”

During the airshow Buzz Aldrin, the second man to land on the moon, became the oldest person to fly with the Thunderbirds during an incentive flight.

The 920th Rescue Wing will be participating in the Air and Sea Show May 27-28, 2017 in Miami Beach, Florida.
