The 943rd Rescue Group received a new security force squadron October 1 which is called Detachment One 943rd RQG Security Forces. The new squadron will provide necessary combat skills training to the rescue group and work closely with their active duty counterparts. "We will bring our expertise to the table to help train (Airmen) for deployments," said Maj. Vanessa L. Schoon, Det. 1 943rd RQG SF commander. "We can work hand-in-hand with the pararescuemen, so we will be more trained when we deploy." As of now the squadron only has four Airmen, but it is expected to grow to 54 Airmen that will include two Active Guard and Reserve Airmen. The new security forces squadron will be an associate unit to the 355th Security Force Squadron here, many of the traditional reservists and AGRs will train with the active duty security forces Airmen. "It will help us have more connections with the active duty side," said Major Schoon. "We will build upon what has already been established by the 943rd and we can grow from there as far as our interactions with the active duty on base." The major is enthusiastic on growing and establishing the group's newest squadron. "I've never worked with a rescue group before, and I look forward to learning more about the combat search-and-rescue mission," said Major Schoon.
