Pilot gives lessons in Afghan culture
PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Air Force Reserve helicopter pilot, Lt. Col. Joe Alcorn, visits his son's 2nd grade class May 22 at Gemini Elementary in Melbourne Beach after a four-month deployment to Afghanistan. He showed the class images of an Afghan school he visited while there. The images showed Afghani children who were the recipients of school supplies donated by the 2nd graders. During the show and tell students made observations about the differences between them and the Afghan students and asked questions about the country. They also kept in touch with Colonel Alcorn through email while he was deployed. Mrs. Debra Ruscillo, the class teacher, said learning is always better when you can relate it to real-life situations.
