PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Maj. Sydney Syme took command of the 920th Logistics Readiness Squadron during an assumption of command ceremony here on March 2.
The assumption of command ceremony, deeply rooted in military tradition, serves as a formal acknowledgment and transition of leadership responsibility from one commanding officer to another. This ceremonial event is symbolized by the passing of a guidon.
Maj. Syme comes to the 920th LRS after serving as commander for the 514th Maintenance Squadron at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. In this role he was responsible for a team of over 100 Airmen, across 13 specialties and functions within the maintenance field.
“Even in face of geopolitical uncertainty your commitment to our mission is truly inspiring. I am honored to lead this team and face the challenges ahead, united in our commitment to the motto, ‘that others may live’,” said Syme, incoming 920th LRS commander.
The 920th LRS serves as the logistical backbone of the 920th Rescue Wing. The squadron can be divided into four main functions: materiel management which oversees the stocking, issuing, inventorying and inspecting of all DoD supplies and equipment; vehicle management for the overall management and maintenance of the wing’s vehicle fleet; fuels management; and lastly, deployment and distribution which is responsible for the centralized command and control, planning and execution of all wing deployment operations as well as the distribution of cargo, passengers, and personal property.
The 920th RQW is a combined arms team enabled by agile combat support capable of multi-lateral assault on a defended point of incident in a highly contested environment. The wing is the only Air Force Reserve Command wing with a combat search and rescue mission, is responsible for saving over 4,000 lives and is responsible for a demanding and compelling array of missions and maintains a state of readiness to deploy at moment’s notice.
