The 920th Aeromedical Staging Squadron offered flu vaccinations to 920th Rescue Wing Airmen here during the drill weekend.

The vaccine is mandatory for all military members.

Influenza, commonly known as “the flu,” is a highly contagious virus that affects the nose, throat, and lungs, with peak transmission typically occurring in late fall, winter, and early spring.

Strategies provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for preventing respiratory illnesses include:

  • Get Vaccinated: Stay updated on vaccines, especially for flu, COVID-19, and RSV.
  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands often or use sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Improve Ventilation: Increase airflow indoors by opening windows or using air purifiers.
  • Stay Home if Sick: Avoid contact with others when you’re feeling unwell.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow, then wash hands.
  • Consider Masks: Wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.
  • Practice Physical Distancing: Keep distance from others in crowded areas.
  • These steps help limit the spread of flu and other respiratory viruses.

Each year, flu strains can vary, which is why an annual flu shot is recommended even for those who received one the previous season. Vaccination not only helps protect individuals from severe symptoms but also reduces the risk of spreading the virus to others, especially vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and people with certain health conditions.

The 920th ASTS includes Airmen with diverse medical specialties who support combat readiness, provide medical exams, immunizations, and occupational safety services for the 920th RQW. These Airmen oversee the health and medical preparedness of the entire wing and deploy personnel as needed for global patient movement.
