Airmen awaiting basic training participate in a program called The Developmental and Training Flight to prepare for the demands of basic military training. By implementing DTF the 920th Rescue Wing has increased the retention rates of Airman in the delayed entree program.

Within a 5 year span the Department of Defense has saved more than $17 million by utilizing this training program.

"We keep the trainees involved and engaged, helping them stay motivated and maintaining their interest in the Air Force," said Master Sgt. Tommy C. Cowen, DTF program manager assigned with the 920th RQW. "When trainees are actively engaged with their goals, they tend to follow through with them."

During monthly unit training assemblies new Airmen hone their skills in drill and ceremony, Air Force core values and physical training to name a few.

"The DTF program prepared me to graduate with honors from basic training," said Senior Airman Whitney Karlskin, logistic planner assigned with the 920th Logistic Readiness Flight.
Airmen are active members of the 920th RQW and receive both pay and accrue promotion points for attending the program prior to leaving for BTM.

"I feel if I'm sworn in, I should be doing my duty," said Karlskin
During DTF's training Airman learn to be part of the AF team and improve leadership skills.

"The comradied DTF establishes provide trainees with a glimpse of what it is like to be part of the Air Force community," said Cowen. "This helps Airmen flourish and stay motivated."

"I feel mentally and physical prepared," said Madeline R. Gaunt, 18, avionics systems specialist assigned with the 920th Maintenance Squadron.

The trainees also have the opportunity to meet with their units and supervisors as well as get a feel for the layout of the base.

"I am excited to know where I am going to work," said Shelly C. Price, 19, avionics systems specialist assigned with the 920th MXS. "I feel like it will help me in basic training because I know what I am coming back too."
