Former POW, European Allied Forces commander visits rescue wing

An Air Force major general who survived more than six years in Vietnam's infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp visited with Airmen from the 920th Rescue Wing here today.

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. John L. Borling spoke about leadership, the lessons he learned during his 37-year Air Force Career and his time serving closely with renowned Air Force Gen. Curtis LeMay.

After Vietnam, the general went on to noteworthy posts - including director of operations for Strategic Air Command, a White House staff assignment and Chief of Staff, Headquarters Allied Forces Europe.

Since his retirement, General Borling authored a book called, "Taps on the Walls: Poems from the Hanoi Hilton," which contains poetry he wrote during his time in captivity.
