NFL football hero Herschel Walker visited Patrick Air Force Base, January 24, taking time to meet with Guardian Angel Airmen from the 920th Rescue Wing. These elite warrior Airmen undergo intense physical and mental training to rescue isolated personnel in combat. They toured Walker through their squadron and demonstrated some of their rescue skills. Throughout the visit, Walker held their rapt attention sharing lots of inspirational accounts of his days playing football. Pararescueman Doug Eccleston
On Dec. 7, 2001, Staff Sgt. Douglas L. Eccleston, pararescueman, 920th Rescue Wing, died while performing his duties rescuing a sailor off the coast of Bermuda. Due to Eccleston's heroic actions, the sailor’s life was saved.

Air Force Reserve Pararescuemen or PJs from Portland’s 304th Rescue Squadron assisted in recovering a hiker who was declared missing October 25, 2016 on Washington state's Table Mountain, a peak rising on the north side of the Columbia River. Early October 26, a team of four PJs scoured steep rocky terrain near the Oregon-Washington border until nightfall with the assistance of volunteers, civil search and rescue teams, AT&T and Apple. Information was obtained to pinpoint the GPS coordinates for the victim's phone allowing searchers to navigate to the cell phone location where they found 31-year-old Melvin Burtch’s body within 50 yards.
